Grand Traverse County Health Department COVID-19 school contacts:

January 4, 2022 * See January 12 Update Above * There has been a lot of new and somewhat confusing information about COVID-19 lately. For now, based on information from the local health department, the protocols for our schools are unchanged.

  • For positive cases, 10 days of at-home isolation are required. The 10 days begin from the first symptoms or for those without symptoms, from the positive test date.
  • Asymptomatic close contacts who are not vaccinated can avoid quarantine by testing at-home daily (a rapid/antigen test is acceptable) for 7 days from their most recent exposure and wearing a mask at school for 7 more days.
    • Please consider this option to ensure continuity of learning for our students – particularly if the exposure was a limited one (not in the same household, for example).
    • Another option that reduces some of the time away from school is to quarantine for 7 days and return to school on day 8 with a negative test result in the past 48 hours – no mask required.
  • Asymptomatic close contacts who are fully vaccinated (with or without a booster dose and even if the vaccine was given more than 90 days ago) are not required to quarantine.
  • Asymptomatic close contacts who have had COVID-19 in the past 90 days and have already completed their 10 days of isolation are not required to quarantine.
Grand Traverse County Health Department is reviewing the research that led to recent changes announced by the Centers for Disease Control. As with all things COVID-19, please watch for future updates. Thank you for continuing to partner with us in this area.
