Learning to play a musical instrument is not only good for the soul – it’s good for developing young brains, as well! Our talented Director of Bands, Charles Taylor, helps instill in students a great love for, and appreciation of, music. Students who are actively engaged in their study of a musical instrument reap great rewards, and enrich us all by sharing their talent as they progress in understanding and skill.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
All fifth graders are enrolled in Band for the first marking period. After nine weeks of general music instruction and an assessment of music aptitude, they are guided to the selection of a musical instrument. Students can opt out of Band after nine weeks, and then are given the opportunity to participate in a vocal music class.
ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON MIDDLE SCHOOL
Here, student proficiency of their chosen instrument gains momentum and the magic of concert band unfolds. From the beginning of 6th grade to the end of 8th, students gain a strong sense of accomplishment by contributing in a unique way to the concert experience.
ST. FRANCIS HIGH SCHOOL
At the high school level, students continue to grow in competency and love for music. Marching band half time performances at Thirlby Field or as members of the high school pep band are memorable experiences for many students. Our concert band receives top rankings at state level competition, and a number of individual students also are acclaimed for their excellence. Just as importantly, our young musicians learn about the role that music can play in the years beyond high school.
